Information Pack and Entry Form The Gleus Community Award aims to reward the use, celebration and promotion of Gaelic as feature of community life in the Highlands and Islands, recognise the important role Gaelic and Gàidhealach culture can play. 1st Prize £3,000; 2nd Prize £1,500; 3rd £500 Entries for Gleus – Gaelic Community of the Year – were to be submitted by May 31st, 2010 with judging taking place in June 2010. The awards will be presented at an event in Summer 2010. Gleus is a new award aimed at identifying the Gaelic communities of the year, recognising the contribution of a community towards the growth and revitalisation of Gaelic usage at community level. Just as community-land or community-energy projects can help revitalise and reinvigorate communities, so too the Gaelic language and Gàidhealach heritage of the Highlands and Islands might be seen as community and cultural assets which can strengthen and sustain communities, promoting a communal sense of identity, of common cultural heritage and of cultural vitality. The use of Gaelic through simple tools such as signs, or Gaelic greetings in a community’s shops, cafés or other meeting places, can help promote an appealing sense of a community proud to celebrate its Gaelic heritage on a day to day basis. Likewise, it is important to promote the availability of spoken Gaelic for Gaels, informally and/or formally, while accessing services and interacting in the community. Social events based on and/or celebrating communities’ Gàidhealach heritage can help promote a sense of cultural and community vitality and wellbeing as well as passing on traditions to new generations.
